You do not need to be of legal age to be authorized to exercise certain rights and obligations. Some bachelor`s degree ages are actually higher than the age of majority. For example, to purchase alcoholic beverages, the licensing age is 21 in all U.S. states. Another example is the voting age, which was 21 before the 1970s in the United States, as well as the age of majority in all or most states.  In the Republic of Ireland, the age of majority is 18, but you must be over 21 to stand for election to the Houses of the Oireachta.  Also in Portugal, the age of majority is 18, but you must be at least 25 to run for public office and 35 to run for president.  A child legally emancipated by a competent court automatically reaches maturity as soon as the court order is signed.
Only emancipation confers the status of maturity before a person is really of age. According to article 227-25 of the Penal Code, the age of consent in France is generally 15 and 18 if the sexual act is with a parent or a person who has « legal or de facto authority » over the minor participant. Legal rape (or its local equivalent) is punishable by up to five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (€83,226). The law was only passed in April 2018 following an outcry from two men accused of having sex with 11-year-old girls. The French government has decided to set the age at 13 or 15. The ten France territories have also set the age of consent at 15. The France has a Romeo and Juliet clause that disclaims liability if a person under the age of 15 has sex with someone within five years of their age. The age of majority refers exclusively to the acquisition of legal control over one`s person, decisions and actions, and the corresponding cessation of the legal authority of the parents (or guardians instead of the parents) over the person and affairs of the child in general. The age of consent in Italy is 14 years and increases to 16 years if one participant occupies a position of authority or influence over the other (teacher, clergyman, etc.). In addition, it is illegal to engage in sexual acts if a person under the age of 14 is present to observe them, even if the minor does not participate. Sexual activity with a prostitute under the age of 18 is illegal in Italy.
In addition, Italy has an age limit rule that allows 13-year-olds to legally consent to partners under three years older (or less). In Cyprus, Ireland, Mexico and Nauru, you cannot legally consent to sex until you are 17. Another 40 countries, including Kenya, Iraq, Nicaragua, Vatican City, Vietnam, Argentina, Rwanda, India and Guatemala, prohibit sexual activities with partners under the age of 18. Buying and drinking alcohol is an act that most people associate with the age of 18 or 21 for young people in America. Indeed, alcohol consumption among adolescents is linked to various health and social problems. In Japan (20), South Korea (19) and Canada (19), the legal drinking age is slightly higher than in the United Kingdom, where the legal drinking age is 18. The legal age at which sexual activity can be consented to is between 11 and 21 in various countries around the world. However, some countries do not have a specific age of consent because they prohibit sexual relations outside of marriage.
Nigeria, an African country, has the lowest age of consent in the world, while Bahrain, an Asian country, has the highest legal age of consent. The legal age at which a person can consent to sexual intercourse in Nigeria is 11 years. This consensus age is the lowest in the world. The Philippines and Angola follow closely behind, with the age of consent in both countries being 12. Obscene laws on minors, which take precedence over the penal code, contain age of consent laws for some prefectures. In some, sexual activity with people under the age of 15 is illegal, but in others, the age is 18. In these prefectures, sexual activity with a person under the age of consent can carry a prison sentence of up to five years. Although rare, in some prefectures, even hugging or holding hands with minors can be illegal.
It is fascinating to see how the legal age differs from that of the UK. We are so fixated here, and it can be confusing to see how some legal ages of majority are much higher or lower in other countries. While in some cases age in other countries is questionable and sometimes troubling, we need to understand that cultures around the world follow different rules and have different beliefs. The « age of consent » is the minimum age at which a person is considered legally capable of consenting to sexual acts. A person younger than the age of consent (i.e. minor) cannot legally confirm that a sexual act in which they participated was consensual. In other words, in the eyes of the law, they are not yet old enough to consent to sex. If a person over the age of consent engages in sexual activity with a minor partner, that activity may be considered legal rape.
In fact, in some jurisdictions, a sexual act may be considered legal rape, even if all participants were minors. The age at which a person is considered legally capable of consenting to sexual activity varies widely around the world – and even in Europe. In Japan, a person must reach the age of 20 to be considered an adult, and parental consent plays an important role in legal issues affecting young people. The age of majority can be confused with the similar concept of the age of bachelor`s degree, which also refers to the threshold of adulthood, but in a much broader and abstract way. As a legal term in art, « license » means « permission » and may imply a legally enforceable right or privilege. So a licensing age is an age at which you have legal permission from the government to do something. The age of majority, on the other hand, is the legal recognition that you have grown up.  The age of consent is the legal age at which a person is considered mature enough to consent to sexual relations. Sexual intercourse with a person under the age of consent is considered legal rape, even (in some jurisdictions) if both partners themselves are younger than the age of consent. There are many reasons why a person might want to change their name. In the UK and many other countries, you can change your name at the age of 18 via a certificate survey, but the legal age in some other countries is much lower. In Russia, you can change your name at 14, while in Japan there is no age restriction. For countries like the United States, the United Arab Emirates, Israel, Spain, Turkey, and Switzerland, you can change your name at age 16. Of the 190 countries, 61% have an alcohol consumption age of 18 or 19. The United States and 11 other countries have an MLDA of 21, the highest MLDA of any country where it is legal to drink (although some parts of India have drinking ages of 25 and 30). Alcohol is banned in 16 countries, all Muslim, although some have exceptions for non-Muslims. Thirty-one states have set the age of consent at 16, eight at 17 and eleven at 18. Twenty-six states have « Romeo and Juliet » laws, or age limit laws, that legalize sexual activity between underage participants if they are close enough to each other in age.
